What is Keto?
Keto (derived from ketones, a naturally occuring chemical in the liver) is a high fat, low carb diet, which induces ketosis; a fat burning metabolic state that provides energy for the body. Normally the human body is fuelled by carbohydrates or glucose (sugar), however when there is insufficient insulin to convert carbohydrates or glucose into energy, the body converts fat into energy instead. As such, t he aim of the keto diet is to raise your ketone levels by significantly reducing your carbohydrate intake in order for the body to enter into ketosis.
A basic keto diet for example would be made up of 70% fat, 25% protein and 5% carbs.
There are many reported benefits of the Keto diet; reduced blood pressure, stabilized blood sugar levels, alleviating some symptoms of epilepsy, and the most well known benefit being weight loss. It's not uncommon for those first starting on a Keto diet to lose 4-5kgs in the first 30 days.
Whilst on a keto diet it's important to avoid the following foods: sweet vegetables, fruits, grains, high carb dairy and processed foods as these are all high in carbohydrates. Staple keto foods include red meat, poultry, fish, healthy fats like coconut oil & avocado (yum) and non-starchy vegetables.
